Standard Guedel Oral Airway, 50/bag
Description
The standard Guedel oral airway is a critical tool in emergency medicine, anesthesia, and pre-hospital care for maintaining an open airway in unconscious patients. Its purpose is to prevent the tongue from obstructing the oropharynx, which can compromise ventilation. This airway adjunct is a staple in both surgical and emergency settings, offering simplicity, speed, and reliability.
Design & Features
Made from semi-rigid polyethylene, the standard Guedel oral airway features a smooth curved shape designed to follow the anatomy of the oropharynx. A built-in bite block at the proximal end helps prevent occlusion due to patient biting and facilitates bag-mask ventilation. The open central lumen allows for suction catheter access, helping clear secretions and maintain patency.
Key product features include:
- Integrated bite block for patient safety and airway stability
- Smooth, curved shape for anatomical alignment and ease of insertion
- Open center channel to permit suctioning or passage of air
- Single-use, latex-free design to minimize cross-contamination risks
Clinical Applications
The Guedel airway is most often used in:
- Unconscious patients to prevent airway obstruction
- Pre-hospital trauma or cardiac arrest scenarios
- Operating rooms during general anesthesia induction
- Procedural sedation cases in emergency departments
It is not recommended for conscious patients due to the risk of triggering a gag reflex, which may lead to vomiting or aspiration.
Sizing & Insertion
The appropriate Guedel airway size is selected by measuring from the corner of the mouth to the angle of the mandible. Proper sizing is crucial:
- Too small: may not displace the tongue effectively
- Too large: may cause airway trauma or improper fit
Insertion is performed by initially inserting the airway upside-down (concave side up), then rotating it 180° once past the tongue. This technique helps avoid pushing the tongue backward and ensures proper placement.
When to Use
- During manual ventilation (e.g., bag-valve-mask use)
- When intubation is delayed or not yet possible
- As an adjunct during CPR or trauma care
- In surgical or procedural sedation environments
